Education systems compared

How school and university stages line up in West Bengal and India, Bangladesh, the UK, Germany and the USA. This page compares the structure only. A qualification taken at the same age is not automatically equivalent, and the syllabus can differ a lot: a GCSE Chemistry course is not the same as Class 10 Chemistry.

Read this first. ICSE (Class 10) and ISC (Class 12) are different qualifications from the same board, CISCE. University syllabuses in India vary by university and programme, so no single university's syllabus represents all of India. Universities abroad decide for themselves which Indian or Bangladeshi qualifications they accept: always check the entry requirements on the course page.

Recent changes to know about

  • West Bengal Higher Secondary is now semester-based. Class XI moved to semesters in 2024-25 and Class XII in 2025-26, four semesters in all. The first semester exam is in September and uses multiple-choice questions. Older Class 11–12 study material may not match the current exams.
  • CBSE has a new curriculum for 2026-27. It was released on 1–2 April 2026 and brings the NCF-2023 scheme of studies into Class IX. Use the official curriculum, not older summaries.
  • Indian degrees are becoming 3 or 4 years. Under the UGC's undergraduate framework, universities offer a 3-year degree or a 4-year Honours, with exit points after each year. West Bengal universities are adopting it university by university: Bankura University, for example, applies it from 2023-24.
  • A 4-year Indian degree can lead straight to a PhD. Under the UGC PhD Regulations 2022, graduates of a 4-year bachelor's with at least 75% marks (or an equivalent grade) can apply for a PhD.
  • Scotland is changing its exam body. The SQA is being replaced by Qualifications Scotland; the SQA's notional transition date was 3 November 2025.
